The origins of Minervino are steeped in myth and tradition. Some say the name comes from a temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva, built by the Japigi, an ancient Mediterranean people. Others link it to nearby Castro<\/strong> \u2013 the ancient Castrum Minervae<\/em> \u2013 destroyed during Saracen invasions. A third theory points to Roman origins, supported by the discovery of an ancient road resembling the Via Appia<\/strong>.<\/p>

Over the centuries, Minervino grew around small rural settlements and \u201ccasali\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 autonomous micro-villages that flourished up to the 17th century. Its historical importance is still remembered in an inscription on the Church of San Pietro<\/strong>, which reads:
“As the lion is the king of animals, so Minervino is the king of the casali.”<\/em><\/p>

Next to the church is the Convent of the Riformati Fathers<\/strong>, built between 1624 and 1628 at the request of the local community, with permission from Archbishop Diego Lopez De Andrada of Otranto.<\/p>

Behind its simple and balanced fa\u00e7ade, the church reveals an interior rich in detail: a single nave with four barrel-vaulted bays, Baroque wooden altars, notable artworks like the Our Lady of Sorrows with Saint Anthony<\/em> attributed to Gallipoli painter Catalano, and a historic organ built in 1733 by Carlo Sanarica.
Recent restorations uncovered vibrant colors in the pulpit and other decorative elements, once hidden under layers of white paint.<\/p>
